The flag is made of 117gr/m2 polyester, a material specially designed to resist wind resistance as little as possible. On average, the lifespan of a flag exposed outside is 6-9 months, but we have clients who change them for even longer periods. We must also take into account the area where they are exposed, the weather and pollution conditions (strong wind, area with a high degree of pollution, frost/thaw, etc.).

It is recommended to lower the flags from the masts when extreme weather conditions are announced: strong wind, storm, hail, etc., precisely to extend their shelflife. 

That flag has the following characteristics:

- it is made of polyester, 100%, with a weight of 117 gr/m2;

- it has good resistance in any atmospheric conditions and is UV stable and antistatic;

- has low opacity but is resistant to peeling and wrinkling;

- the material is treated fireproof class B;

-tension at wind gusts 1042 kN/m2;

- air permeability 950 l/min;

- fiber tension: in length approx. 400N; in width approx. 700N;

- heat deformation (195 degrees C): in length max 2%; in width max 2%;

- the ink used is sublimation printing ink fixed on the textile material in a special oven at 160 degrees Celsius, ecological.

History: The rainbow flag representing the LGBTQA+ community was created by Gilbert Baker, and first flown in the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade on June 25, 1978. The original flag consisted of eight horizontal stripes, pink, red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, indigo, and violet, but pink was removed after a year due to fabric shortages. It’s been rumored that Baker might have been emulating the song “Over the Rainbow” by Judy Garland (one of the first gay icons), the Stonewall Riots, or based off a flag for world peace flown at campuses nationwide in the 1960’s.

Baker’s life changed when he met the first openly gay politician, Harvey Milk in 1974. Milk challenged Baker to come up with a symbol for the gay community in 1977. After Milk’s assassination on November 27, 1978, demands for the flag rapidly increased.

The rainbow flag has grown immensely in visibility and acceptance and is now widely accepted as the predominant symbol for the LGBTQA+ community. Also in June 2015, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) acquired the original flag. Gilbert Baker died on March 31, 2017, but his legacy will always live on.
